$5,000 in BP Fuel Vouchers a Boost to ECOED Trust

$5,000 in BP Fuel Vouchers a Boost to ECOED Trust

The Environment, Conservation and Outdoor Education Trust (ECOED) today received a welcome boost from BP in the form of $5,000 of fuel vouchers.

Jonty Mills, NZ Community Investment Manager for BP, joined the ECOED team at the Pan Pac Kiwi Crèche, to see firsthand the facilities that look after young kiwi and provide outdoor education opportunities for Hawke’s Bay students.

Jonty personally handed over the vouchers to ECOED and said "The work the ECOED team undertake really struck a chord with us this year, as part of our 2011 BP Vouchers for Volunteers Programme.”

“The fact that ECOED has a long term sustainable focus, encompassing the environment, conservation and education all rolled into one is the main reason they were chosen as one of our highlight recipients from over 1800 applicants. We're genuinely thrilled to support the many volunteers who help out at ECOED and my visit certainly reinforced the choice we made."

Alastair Bramley, General Manager of ECOED took Jonty for a field trip to the ECOED site at Lake Opouahi north of Tutira. Alastair said “The fuel vouchers mean we can help to meet some of the transport costs for our dedicated volunteers, working to restore kiwi in the Kaweka Forest Park and educating our kids about living in and looking after the outdoors.”

ECOED deliver the two distinctive programmes, “Save Our Kiwi Hawke’s Bay” which has already raised and released over 100 kiwi into the wild, and “Schools Outdoors Hawke’s Bay” which provides wilderness education experiences for up to 2,000 students every year. The Trust is currently improving some facilities on the site to better support school groups, and hopes to shortly build an eel-viewing jetty which was the prize-winning design from Twyford School in last year’s ASB Young Enterprise competition. ECOED has recently upgraded its website, www.ecoed.org.nz and supporters can now also keep up to date with the latest news and developments on Facebook.
