Employment Law Prize Awarded

Danielle Bailey is the 2011 winner of the Simpson Grierson Employment Law Prize. The award recognises the student with the best overall mark in the University of Auckland's employment law class.

Danielle finished top of her class in this paper and graduates in May with a BSc/LLB (Hons) conjoint degree before being admitted to the bar in July this year.

Danielle credits part of her successful result to Associate Professor Bill Hodge of the University of Auckland. "My thanks really go to Bill, whose lecturing style encouraged my interest. He urged us to keep up-to-date with the employment issues, both nationally and internationally and as a result, I was able to apply what we learnt in class to current employment affairs. Consequently, I maintained a deeper understanding of employment law."

Associate Professor Hodge commented that "Danielle demonstrated her understanding of the various issues, both fundamental and evolving, that shape employment law at this time and I was impressed with her ability to communicate how important correct interpretation of the law is to the final outcome of a decision".

A cheque for $1,500 was presented to Danielle by Phillipa Muir, head of Simpson Grierson's employment law group, at a morning tea function at Simpson Grierson's Auckland office on Friday, 13 April. "The future of the law lies in part with students like Danielle and we are delighted to be able to contribute to the development of these talented people" said Ms Muir.

Simpson Grierson has funded 11 scholarships and two prizes over the last year and has been sponsoring the University of Auckland's Employment Law Prize for eight years.
