Korean Students Start At Whitireia
Whitireia has welcomed the first group of Korean students to its Porirua campus, under the Korean Government initiative, to offer tertiary training in hospitality and tourism, to scholarship students.
Twenty students arrived in Porirua at the weekend where they will spend the next 12 months studying at Whitireia. They range in age from 22-30 and come with either a Korean tertiary qualification in hospitality and/or tourism or have relevant work experience in the tourism and hospitality industry in Korea.
The students started with an orientation day at the Porirua campus on Monday. They will now complete four weeks of English Language study, before commencing their study in hospitality and tourism, in July. Six months will be spent learning about travel and tourism then, around three months of barista training will follow. The students will undertake formal work experience as part of their course also. This will take place around mid January 2013.
We will work on finding appropriate work experience placements in the industry said Helen Gardiner, Dean, Faculty of Service Industries. “We will be looking for placements in the hospitality and tourism industry in the greater Wellington region” she said. “This is an excellent way to give these students hands-on experience in this field as well as it being an opportunity to showcase it to them”.
This is the first time a group of students have studied in Porirua under this initiative. Previous Korean Government scholarship recipients have been based in Auckland. Whitireia and its Porirua City campus in particular, is now the polytechnic and city of choice said James Ahn, NZMentor Limited. “Porirua City and the Whitireia campus offer the students a good, friendly, kiwi experience”.
2013 will see future opportunities strengthen under this Korean Government scholarship initiative where up to 60 students will be sent to Whitireia in Porirua, to study.
