Press Release: Carncot School
New Private Co-educational School for Manawatu: Stanford Junior Prep at Carncot
Choice and quality of education have been the hallmarks of Carncot School since 1903. The School’s founder, Constance Stanford, established the school to meet the need for private education for the sons and daughters of the Manawatu. These demands by parents for the same quality education for both their sons and daughter can now be met.
“In honour of this foresight and tradition, we have decided to open a new co-educational junior school – Stanford Junior Prep at Carncot,” said Rodney Wong, Chairman BOT, “and Stanford will initially cater for Year 1-6 boys and girls. However, it is our intention to extend this, if and when there is demand from parents, or when facilities become available."
The Stanford uniform will be the existing Carncot design for girls, allowing them to transition seamlessly into the Carncot senior school, while the boys will be in consistent shades of blue, and they will share the Carncot school tie.
The Principal, Christine Michalski, stated, “The first three years of formal schooling are critical in developing the habits and attitudes that form the foundation for all future learning. The school will continue to provide its personalised programmes through specialist teachers, small class sizes and catering for individual learning styles, which are fundamental to the on-going success of our students.” She added that Mr Pearson, a teacher at the school, is looking forward to his role as Dean of Boys. “He has a wide range of interests, including sport, outdoor education, music and drama."
An information evening is scheduled for Wednesday, 26th September at 7pm for interested families, and to enrol the first group of boys and girls to start in Term 1, 2013. The Principal is now accepting expressions of interest from prospective parents to bring their sons and daughters to the coeducational Stanford Junior Prep at Carncot.

Background information
The name Carncot has associations with Miss Stanford’s Irish origins and the family of Stanford of Carn. The addition of ‘cot’ emerged when Constance wanted a name for her school, then situated in Duke Street (now Princess Street). Her old friend, Ethel Wilson, thought it could be turned into a diminutive and suddenly said, “Carncot” and the name has remained.
While Carncot Private School has a long and proud history of educating girls, the School also enrolled a number of boys until as late as 1980, as well as kindergarten-aged children. As the roll grew, Carncot relocated a number of times until, in 1998, the former Fitzherbert homestead, in which it had been operating since 1955, was moved forward on its present site and a new school built at the back. Then a new hall was added in 2002.
When the School finally moved to its current site on 263 Broadway Avenue, the sign outside the school officially read, Carncot School for Girls.
