More than 60 researchers from around the country will converge on Wellington this week to discuss the latest R&D innovations and to showcase their work. The Metro Group of Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics is hosting a two day forum for ITP colleagues from around New Zealand to share the latest thinking and approaches to applied R&D.
The Metro Group comprises New Zealand’s six major Metropolitan Institutes: CPIT, MIT, Otago Polytechnic, Unitec, WelTec and Wintec. The Metro Group’s R&D focus is to deliver value and growth from collaboration on strategic activities, including joint programmes, applied research and technology development and transfer.
“We welcome our fellow researchers from New Zealand’s Institutes of Technology & Polytechnics to Wellington this week to showcase some of their very exciting and innovative projects developed in conjunction with leading edge industries. Research-led Institutes of Technology & Polytechnics make a significant contribution to the economy’s innovation-led growth and the sharing of experiences and successes will further develop the vocational educational and training sector’s collective capability in this area,” says Dr Linda Sissons, Wellington Institute of Technology Chief Executive.
“We have had a strong focus over the last ten years on applied research and technology development. R&D that improves the economic productivity of business is a key activity for the Metro Group. It is very fitting that Wellington is the host of this major event given the leading part science and technology plays in the Wellington Region,” says Dr Sissons.
Innovative research activities from the Institute of Technology & Polytechnic sector on display include:
Ø the YouBike - the world’s first bed mountable cardiovascular exerciser;
Ø demonstrations of alternative power and fuel including Powerhouse Wind and Somes Island Energy Generation;
Ø Heatback – a system to capture and reuse heat from household hot water cylinders;
