MIT students in Annual Wella Hairdressing competition

Annual Wella Hairdressing competition allows MIT students to showcase their talent

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) Hair and Beauty students will once again have the opportunity to compete to exhibit their skills at the Wella Trends Vision Awards for 2013.

The event mirrors the international hair industry’s Wella Professional International Trends Vision Awards in that students must create a concept based on one of the same four trends showcased in the international version.

This year’s theme for the international competition was The Sound of Colour and the four trends were: Fusion, Echo, Decibel and Allegra. Each student had to choose one of these trends to create their own hairstyle, make-up and outfit.

The industry judges who will come to MIT to judge the competition include MIT alumnae Mana Dave, who won the 2012 Hairdresser of the Year and Brad Lepper from French Revolver Studio. Other industry judges include Natasha Boustridge from Blaze and Laura Williams from Jan Waite.

The competition gives students four hours to cut, colour and style their model’s hair in accordance to a mood board showing the inspiration for their style.

Senior Lecturer of Hair and Beauty Sonia Baker-Johnston says, “The competition is a really good way to prepare the students for the industry and teaches them important skills like creativity and time management that come with being a professional hairdresser.”

“If a customer comes into a salon with a picture, the students need to know how to copy that style but also how to add their own signature,” she says. “This competition involves students taking a theme from the international competition and producing their own style which is an important skill to learn.”

Angel James is one of the students who will participate in the Wella Trends Visions Awards competition.

“It’s been hard work coming up with an idea and finding a model but I know it will be worth it in the end when everything comes together.”

“I love hairdressing because you are learning something new everyday and so it’s always fun and exciting.”

Angel’s ultimate goal is to start up her own hair salon and continue pursuing fashion hair styling.

The Wella Trends Vision Awards competition for 2013 will be held in Manukau Institute of Technology’s Hair and Beauty School salon at the Otara Campus on November 12.
