Wainuiomata students gain from Ignite Sport’s news

A funding boost of $15,000 to Ignite Sport Trust will see up to 200 Wainuiomata students attend leadership and life-skills programmes during the next year.

The government funding was announced by National List MP in the Hutt Valley Chris Bishop yesterday during a visit with Prime Minister John Key to the charity youth development organisation. They spent more than an hour talking to staff and learning about Ignite Sport’s programmes that use sport to engage and motivate young people to fulfil their potential.

Ignite Sport Coordinator Kevin Goldsbury was thrilled to have the funding confirmed.

“This means we will be able to continue our programmes at Wainuiomata Intermediate but also begin a senior leadership programme at Wainuiomata High School. I spoke to the principals at both schools and they are very excited.

“More importantly we will be able to help students at both these schools develop critical life and leadership skills, through sport, and alongside the normal curriculum,” said Mr Goldsbury.

The grant to the Lower-Hutt based organisation of $15,000 of ‘services for young people’ funding comes through the Ministry of Youth Development.

Ignite Sport began working in Wainuiomata Intermediate mid-2014 with a group of 30 students. Programmes have followed each term with a new group but were looking to wind up due to a lack of funding.

“We are grateful for this help to continue with these students and to begin working with seniors at Wainuiomata High School. Our unique holistic approach has proven positive impacts on a young person’s education, leadership potential, personal and sporting life,” said Mr Goldsbury.
