A hat trick of Top in the World results for ACG

A hat trick of Top in the World results for ACG Senior College

19 February 2016, Auckland. Last night at the Cambridge International Examinations Outstanding Learner Awards ceremony, ACG Senior College enjoyed a trio of significant successes. Three is definitely the magic number this year for them: one teacher had three top awards in his classes; another student, Katherine Yang, received three top awards this year; and Angela Chan just received her third top award in three yearsand has been accepted into Cambridge University to study law.

To put these results in context, last year more than one million students sat Cambridge examinations in more than 10,000 schools in countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, United States, China, India and Singapore, as well as throughout Europe, South America and the Middle East. Graham Gottard, Associate Principal, ACG Senior College says, “We’re thrilled with the outstanding success of our students. The hard work of both the students and teachers within our specialist culture of learning shows what can be achieved.”

Justin Peters, a teacher at ACG Senior College, is understandably delighted with this year's results too. He taught three students who gained top awards. This is not entirely surprising, as he has already been recognised nationally, coming runner up in the student nominated Warehouse Stationery Inspiring Teaching Award. One of Peters’ students Marek Townley received a High Achievement (Top in New Zealand in a subject with lower numbers) in A Level Sociology; another - Katherine Yang - got Top in New Zealand (also High Achievement) in AS Sociology; and Angela Chan got Top in New Zealand (High Achievement) in A Level Psychology.

For Katherine this made it a happy third in a trio of awards. She got Top in the World for A Level Art and Design and a Top in New Zealand (High Achievement) for A Level Graphic Design. Katherine’s Art and Design award adds to her painting teacher Andrew Strachan’s long list of student achievements. In the past 12 years, 11 of his students have gained Top in the World results and three Top in New Zealand in his time at ACG Senior College.

It was also third time's a charm for Angela Chan. In addition to her award this year, she has received a Top in the World AS Business Studies and a Top in New Zealand A Level Business Studies in the last two consecutive years. Angela has also been accepted into Cambridge University to study law.

Speaking at the awards was another ACG student, Hayley Ibold, who graduated from ACG Parnell. Receiving a Top in the World and Top in New Zealand award she talked about the merits of an international high school qualification. She went on to say, “Not only do we need to celebrate these awards, but also the people who have inspired us to get here. Now it’s our turn to inspire others to achieve their goals.”

It has once again been a highly successful year across all ACG Auckland schools with five Top in World and 13 Top in New Zealand results.
