Ngāi Tauira geared up to host Te Huinga Tauira 2016
Victoria University of Wellington’s Māori Students’ Association, Ngāi Tauira are ready to host 300 tauira at the annual Māori Students Conference, Te Huinga Tauira o Te Mana Ākonga of which Ngāi Tauira is a member.
Co-President Geneveine Wilson said the plans have been coming together well over the past 12 months. “We have a great team of people behind us who have worked tirelessly to host 300 tauira from across the motu. Te Huinga Tauira is an opportunity for Māori students to nurture and maintain their cultural identity and access social and support networks outside of their institutions.”
Ko tā te Tumuaki Takirua a Raimona Tapiata “Ko te kaupapa nei he mea whakanui, whakatairanga, whakarangatira i tō tātou reo, ō tātou tikanga me ngā ātanga katoa o te ao Māori whānui. Mā ngā mātāpono nei ngā tauira Māori e hāpai, e tautoko i ngā taumahatanga o ao tauira, hei oranga tinana, hinengaro, wairua. Ko ētahi o ngā mahi i te hui ko ngā hākinakina Māori, ko te Kapa Haka, me te Tautohetohe ka tū ki te Whare Paremata."
“Ngāi Tauira have done a wonderful job to prepare for Te Huinga Tauira and like every year, Te Huinga provides an opportunity for tauira Māori to participate in activities that enhance and add value to their experiences within the context of their learning,” says Ivy Harper, Tumuaki of Te Mana Ākonga.
“Te Huinga is a joint effort between Ngāi Tauira and our sponsors, including Victoria University of Wellington, Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Māori, Te Puni Kōkiri and others. Te Huinga’s success is based upon the support we have received from our sponsors, and our thanks must go to them for believing in our kaupapa and their willingness to be part of our event” concludes Project Manager, Elijah Pue.
