11th Biennial CensusAtSchool Launches February 13
CensusAtSchool New Zealand - TataurangaKiTeKura Aotearoa celebrates the launch of their eleventh biennial bilingual survey next month to once again comprehensively chart students’ views of their own lives.
From February 13, media will be able to report the voice of Kiwi students on topics as wide-ranging as their favourite ice cream flavour, the amount of time they spend on digital devices, whether or not they have blocked someone in the past week, opinions on alcohol, how many close friends they have, how happy they say they are overall, and their favourite sport to play.
CensusAtSchool New Zealand - TataurangaKiTeKura Aotearoa, is a non-profit, online educational project that aims to bring statistics to life in both English and Māori-medium classrooms. Supervised by teachers, students from Years 3-13 anonymously answer 30 questions in English or te reo Māori, and later explore the results in class. CensusAtSchool runs every two years, and in 2021, more than 35,000 students took part, representing approximately 600 schools and 1,200 teachers.
Media can preview the questions on the CensusAtSchool website here. We encourage you to browse the website for information and to see what sorts of stories emerged from CensusAtSchool in previous years. To find out which of your local schools are taking part, click here.
While the complete database is not available to media, information is available to data journalists through CensusAtSchool data tools, which comprise full summaries and random samples. CensusAtSchool can generate summary statistics for journalists who are keen to explore a topic.
CensusAtSchool is a collaborative project involving teachers, the University of Auckland’s Department of Statistics, Statistics New Zealand, and the Ministry of Education.
CensusAtSchool is co-directed by Professional Teaching Fellow Anne Patel of the Department of Statistics at the University of Auckland and Rachel Cunliffe, a former lecturer in the department who runs the web design studio cre8d design. She is the principal media spokesperson for CensusAtSchool and can be contacted at census@stat.auckland.ac.nz or phone 027 3833 746.
