Massey University Celebrates Two Decades Of Research With Professor Yihuai Gao

Professor Yihuai Gao Honoured for 20 Years of Mushroom Science Collaboration

Professor Yihuai Gao, a world-leading fungi researcher and founder of international nutraceutical business Alpha Group, has been honoured by Massey University for two decades of groundbreaking collaboration in medicinal mushroom science and functional nutrition.

The recognition took place on 31 July 2025 at the Riddet Institute in Palmerston North, marking 20 years of joint studies into bioactive compounds found in reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as lingzhi. These compounds, long valued in traditional Chinese medicine, have been the focus of Professor Gao’s early and ongoing work to identify natural immune-supporting and cardiovascular-enhancing properties.

The Early Research Journey of Yihuai Gao at Massey University

Over the years, Yihuai Gao has partnered closely with Distinguished Professors Paul Moughan and Harjinder Singh, co-establishing the Alpha-Massey Natural Nutraceutical Research Centre. This facility has become a key player in validating the health benefits of medicinal mushroom extracts, helping cement New Zealand’s position in global nutraceutical innovation.

Reflecting on the milestone, Professor Gao described the partnership as “life-changing” both professionally and personally.

Alpha Group – From Yihuai Gao’s Start-Up Vision to Global Expansion

Founded in 1998, Alpha Group has grown from a small New Zealand start-up into a multimillion-dollar biotech company with manufacturing facilities in Auckland and China, distributing health supplements worldwide.

The company’s product range is built on science-backed innovation, blending traditional knowledge with modern research to meet the rising demand for natural health solutions globally.

Massey University Event Celebrates Prof Yihuai Gao’s Scientific Achievements

The anniversary celebration included a tour of the Riddet Institute’s upgraded food bioprocessing laboratories and a luncheon at the historic Turitea House. During the event, Massey University Provost Professor Giselle Byrnes presented Professor Gao with a framed letter acknowledging the enduring collaboration and its influence on global health science.

From Kiwifruit Bioactives to Fungal Fermentation – Prof Yihuai Gao’s Research Evolution

Before turning to fungal fermentation, Yihuai Gao conducted extensive research into the nutritional benefits of kiwifruit bioactives. This early work laid the foundation for his later breakthroughs in mushroom biotechnology, a field in which he has helped position New Zealand as a recognised global innovator.

Future Projects: Prof Yihuai Gao Leads New Shiitake Mushroom Biotech Initiative

Looking ahead, the collaboration between Alpha Group and the Riddet Institute will expand into a new shiitake mushroom biotech project. This research aims to unlock additional bioactive properties that could further benefit human health.

Academic and Industry Leaders Praise Professor Yihuai Gao’s Contribution to Science

Distinguished Professor Paul Moughan commented:

“From humble beginnings, Alpha Group has grown into a substantial enterprise, using New Zealand science to build a strong bridge with China.”

Massey University Provost Professor Giselle Byrnes added:

“The partnership between Yihuai Gao, Alpha Group, and the Riddet Institute reflects a shared commitment to food, nutrition, and health research that can open global opportunities and enhance public wellbeing.”
