Reintroduction Of Cambridge International At Samuel Marsden Collegiate School
Samuel Marsden Collegiate School has announced the reintroduction of Cambridge International from 2026, a development that reflects the school’s strong academic foundations and its future-focused approach to teaching and learning. Marsden’s long-standing tradition of rigorous academic standards, combined with small class sizes and personalised support, ensures every student is known, challenged, and inspired to achieve at their best.
In line with the school’s commitment to continual improvement, Marsden will begin its renewed Cambridge journey with the introduction of Cambridge IGCSE Extended Mathematics for identified students in Years 10–11. The move responds to growing interest among families seeking international curriculum opportunities to complement Marsden’s already rigorous academic offering, and it opens the door to enhanced pathways for learners.
Why Cambridge?
Cambridge International is a globally recognised curriculum and assessment framework developed by the University of Cambridge. It emphasises deep understanding of concepts, critical thinking, and mastery of knowledge—values that align strongly with Marsden’s academic philosophy. Cambridge qualifications are taken in more than 160 countries and are widely recognised by universities and employers worldwide.
How the programme will work
At Marsden, the Cambridge Extended Mathematics course will be offered by invitation as part of the Year 10 Extension Mathematics programme. It is a two-year pathway running alongside:
- NCEA Level 1 Mathematics, and
- the NCEA Numeracy co-requisite assessment.
Students will have the opportunity to sit the Cambridge IGCSE examination at the end of Year 11.
Looking ahead
Marsden views this re-engagement with Cambridge as a focused and deliberate step towards strengthening a knowledge-rich and academically rigorous curriculum. Beginning with an area of established strength ensures strong foundations as the school continues exploring wider Cambridge opportunities as part of its ongoing curriculum development.
