Students Welcome New Zealand First's Promises

New Zealand First (NZF) has joined the growing movement towards a realistic tertiary education sector with the release of their Tertiary Education Policy yesterday.

APSU Student Union hopes what is promised by NZF will be implemented under any coalition they may form.

"Once again we have seen a move towards moderating the burgeoning student debt," said APSU Student Union President John Barkess today.

"NZF have indicated that there is a very real problem with the Student loan Scheme and they have proposed a possible solution. It appears that only National and ACT are unconcerned at the issues facing today's students."

"NZF have once again stated they are prepared to work towards a Universal Student Allowance although the last time they promised this we end up worse off. Perhaps this time their interpretation of the English language will match our own," said Barkess.

Other positive points for students include the reinstatement of the Emergency Unemployment benefit - this treats students the same as every other New Zealander; the re-establishment of course costs to the 1998 level; increased funding to some science and technology courses.
