Why Are We Still Waiting?

Pharmac continues to postpone their decision on the funding of dementia medications. Alzheimers NZ has been waiting since October 2001 for a decision from Pharmac, the Government drug-buying agency, regarding the funding of medications that improve or delay the progression of dementia.

“Pharmac needs to make up its mind whether it is going to fund these drugs or not. We have been waiting in limbo too long, and we just need to know either way” states Wendy Fleming, National President, Alzheimers NZ.

She goes on to say that “The drugs are expensive as they cost between $200 to $250 per month, and greater health inequalities are being created between the wealthy and the poor when access to them depends on one’s ability to pay”.

Three of these drugs are currently registered for use in New Zealand and the feedback on their effectiveness and approved quality of life for people while taking these drugs is constantly being reported to the Alzheimer’s organisation.

Alzheimers New Zealand is committed to ensure that the Government understands the importance of these medications and does NOT FORGET THEM.
