Family Safety for Guy Fawkes Night

Parental supervision is the most important thing to remember for Guy Fawkes night, according to Plunket's National Clinical Adviser, Brenda Hynes.

"While Guy Fawkes night has evolved to become a social evening for families to get together with friends and neighbours at public and private events, children of all ages need to be kept safe and warm.

"Children copy adults, so it is important to make sure that matches and lighters are kept well out of children's reach, particularly on this night when excitement is high and it's easy to forget," said Brenda Hynes.

Plunket suggests that adults should be the only ones allowed to light fireworks and that children be kept at a safe distance.

And a word on behalf of loved family pets ... keep them inside as the noise and bright lights frighten most animals.
