Be the Difference Campaign Encourages Households to Save the Drain for Rain
This week, as part of its Be the Difference programme, Greater Wellington Regional Council launches a promotional campaign encouraging individuals and households to think before they put anything down stormwater drains.
“Many people don’t realise that stormwater drains are designed for rainwater only. Stormwater flows largely untreated into our streams, rivers and out to sea” said Margaret Shields, Chairperson of the Greater Wellington Regional Council.
The campaign, including radio and newspaper advertisements, aims to raise awareness of three common pollutants of our rivers and coasts – paint from washing paint brushes incorrectly; detergent from washing cars on the street; and litter and dog droppings.
“We want to encourage people to think about the impact that weekend chores such as washing the car, painting the house and walking the dog can have on popular leisure activities such as swimming, fishing and walking by the river,” said Cr Shields.
“The greater Wellington region has wonderful rivers, streams and coastlines that we all enjoy. But if we want to protect the quality of our water for generations to come, we need to adopt environmentally friendly behaviours. Simple changes can make a big difference – wash your paint brushes in the laundry sink, wash your car on the lawn or at a carwash and pick up litter and dog droppings,” said Cr Shields.
“A sustainable region is everyone’s responsibility. Joining the Be the Difference programme is an easy way of learning ways to help the environment and ensuring the Greater Wellington region remains a great place to live.”
Be the Difference is Greater Wellington Regional Council’s programme to involve individuals and households in protecting the environment by taking personal responsibility for their actions. Be the Difference members will receive information packs three times a year, giving advice and tips on how they can protect our environment and live a more sustainable lifestyle.
5199 residents have joined the programme since it was launched three weeks ago.
