Diabetes New Zealand elects new President
Diabetes New Zealand is pleased to announce the appointment of Murray Dear as President. He was elected at the Diabetes New Zealand Annual Conference earlier this month. He has been actively involved with the Waikato Diabetes Society for a number of years, and was elected President in 1999. In 2000 he was appointed Chair of the Waikato Local Diabetes Team.
Most recently (2003) he was Chairperson of the National Diabetes Working Group, whose primary purpose was to oversee the development of a disease management approach to diabetes, from primary prevention through to tertiary treatment.
Mr Dear is very committed to furthering awareness and public understanding about diabetes.
“Diabetes New Zealand is a cause with a strong mission. That is to reduce the incidence, particularly of Type 2 diabetes, and to drive a public information campaign through public and private sector funding.”
“We now know that Type 2 Diabetes can be delayed or prevented. Many people have a condition known as pre-diabetes which puts them at a much higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. We need to stem this diabetes epidemic and focusing on people in this category is a preventative measure,” he said.
Diabetes New Zealand will be undertaking a major pre-diabetes awareness programme through the Diabetes Awareness Week held in November.
Mr Dear has strong management and financial management skills and extensive experience in administration management.
