Vaccinators gear up for meningococcal immunisation campaign

Around 40 registered nurses are attending a training course to enable them to become registered vaccinators.

Hawke’s Bay District Health Board medical officer of health, Dr Caroline McElnay said during the vaccination campaign next year practice nurses and other primary care providers will be vaccinating over 14,000 under five year olds as well as young people out of school, aged up to 19 years, equating to around 52,000 injections to be given.

On top of that nurses would be giving around 30,000 primary school children three injections each…which adds up to 90,000 immunisations in schools throughout Hawke’s Bay.

“With a grand total of over 140,000 injections to be given, we’re going to need a lot of registered vaccinators…and are still keen to hear from any registered nurses wanting to work during the meningococcal b immunisation campaign,” said Dr McElnay said.
