Ronald McDonald not a healthy role model for our kids
There should be no McDonald’s advertising or signage on the new mobile oral health service being launched by the Hon Annette King at Pakaraka in Kerikeri tomorrow.
This oral health service has been sponsored by Ronald McDonald House Trust.
“The Public Health Association (PHA) is delighted that the oral health service for rural children is being improved, but any McDonald’s branding is really inappropriate,” says PHA Director Dr Gay Keating.
All District Health Boards are in a difficult financial position, and sponsorship is attractive option to make services available.
Advertising or sponsorship signage by Ronald McDonald House is inconsistent with other health messages to the community, in particular to children.
“The Northland District Health Board and the Ministry of Health have many staff and contracts working to encourage healthy lifestyles,” Dr Keating says.
“This includes the Healthy Eating Healthy Action strategy, and educating our children about food and oral health.”
Signage for fast food with its high fat, high sugar content is inconsistent with programmes that encourage healthy living – and is a very confusing message to give children.
