Karamu Stream & Clive River Still Off Limits Due To Sewage

Following yesterday’s sewage spill in to the Karamu Stream, Hawke’s Bay District Health Board’s medical officer of health, Dr Caroline McElnay, said preliminary results were received today from water samples taken last night by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council staff.

These results confirm that sewage is moving down the Karamu Stream towards the Clive River and the sewage is still expected to reach the Clive River mouth some time between 6pm today (Wednesday 6th April) and 12 noon tomorrow (Thursday 7 April).

Dr Caroline McElnay reiterates her advice to avoid any recreational water activities in the Karamu Stream from Havelock North down to the Clive River mouth, until sampling shows that levels of contamination have dropped to safe recreational limits. This is unlikely to be the case until Friday at the earliest.

Warning signs have been erected.
