Not a Happy Birthday for Accident Victim
The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported a seriously injured man from a road crash this morning.
The helicopter responded, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, to a landing site near the scene of the accident in Belmont, Lower Hutt. There we found a Lower Hutt man, who turned 41 today, in a very serious condition.
Information from the scene is that the man was riding a three wheel off road bike which came rolling down a bank and then struck, or was stuck by, a passing car. Wellington Free Ambulance, fire and police were all at the scene. The patient was transported by road ambulance to the Belmont School, where the helicopter pilot had located a safe landing zone.
We arrived at Wellington Hospital at about 7:15am, six minutes after taking off from Belmont, and transferred the man to the Emergency Department. He is expected to be moved to the Intensive Care Unit shortly.
