Horse Riding Accident South East Of Seddon

The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter winched a woman from the scene of a horse riding accident South East of Seddon this afternoon.

Christchurch Ambulance control was notified by a 111 call that a woman was injured when kicked by a horse. The person who rang 111 had to ride a horse 2.5 hours from the scene of the accident to raise the alarm.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic on board, departed Wellington at 1:50pm and flew to Medway Valley to pick up the woman who rang 111. She then directed us to the accident scene.

When we arrived overhead the injured woman our paramedic was winched out of the helicopter to assess and treat her. Once her fracture was stabalised the paramedic and patient were winched back into the helicopter and she was transported to Wairau Hospital in Blenheim.

"The woman was riding her horse and got kicked by another horse alongside of her" says Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman Dave Greenberg. "It was a pretty nasty break but luckily she was with a group of people so while one rode back to get help the others kept her warm and comfortable to await our arrival".

The 29 year old Medway Valley woman is now in Wairau Hospital, in a stable condition, suffering from a compound fracture to her leg.
