Sex education messages are failing miserably

The latest figures relating to sexual disease in NZ show that our current sex education messages are failing miserably

The latest figures from the Ministry of Health relating to an increase in Sexually Transmitted Infections in New Zealand show, once again, that the current condom based sex education programs are failing miserably.

It is outrageous that tax-payer money is being spent on programs that are obviously not working, such as the recent "hubba, hubba" promotion, and that those responsible for these programs will not admit to their obvious failure.

The latest figures show that increased promotion of condom based sex education is simply adding to the problem of increased sexual disease.

It is disgraceful that those who promote such programs make the claim that there is not enough "safe" sex or condom promotion, when today we have more of both in NZ than we have ever had before.

Condoms are not the magic ingredient that suddenly makes casual sex safe, and the current messages being given to young people are reminiscent of the ludicrous messages we used to promote about smoking - "not smoking is best, but if you must smoke, use a filter".

Until sex education is returned to the rightful domain of the family, and values based education that promotes and encourages abstinence is taught, we will simply continue to see more of the same problems.
