Asian Issues Unique When It Comes to Problem Gambling

Asian problem gamblers have a unique profile, the Public Health Association conference in Palmerston North heard today.

“They are ashamed to admit they have a problem so they tend to present themselves later than other groups; often when they have lost all their savings,” John Wong from the Problem Gambling Foundation told the conference.

They are also unlikely to have experienced legal gambling before.

“For many, there is no legal gambling in their country of origin, so this means they are especially vulnerable when they come to New Zealand. Gambling issues are exacerbated by the difficulties of being a migrant.”

Mr Wong said that he is encouraged by numbers presenting for counselling and support however.

“We have done a lot of public education so Asian people are seeking help.”
