The New Zealand Medical Association has presented its highest honour, the Chairman’s Award, to General Practitioner Council Chairman Dr Peter Foley.

The annual Chairman’s Award is the NZMA’s recognition of individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the health of New Zealand.

Dr Peter Foley, a Napier GP, was inaugural Chairman of the GP Leaders’ Forum. Earlier this year he was at the forefront of the General Practice effort to engage with the Government and its agencies during the debate over General Practice fees during the process of implementing the 45-64 year capitation increases.

During a time of very high intensive activity by many individuals and organisations, Dr Foley stood out for his leadership, which was recognised by his General Practice colleagues, other doctors, the media, politicians, and officials.

The efforts of the GPLF team, led by Dr Foley, resulted in effective (though belated) involvement for General Practice in the contracting process, and in a successful outcome.

The NZMA has also awarded two Fellowships, which are given to NZMA members who have given service above and beyond duty -- for the NZMA, for doctors, and for patients.

* Rotorua GP Dr Tricia Briscoe, from Rotorua, has given long and dedicated service to the NZMA, including as Chairman, a member of the Primary Health Care Multi Employer Collective Agreement (MECA) negotiating team, GP Council Chair, and chair of the Ministerial Test Panel for General Practice Compliance Costs.

* Dr Peter Gootjes, from Mosgiel, has worked long and hard for the Otago Division of the NZMA, including being Divisional Secretary, and Divisional President. He is currently CEO of Southern Community Laboratories in Dunedin.
