Over $90,000 invested in Hawke’s Bay medical research
The Hawke’s Bay Medical Research Foundation is pleased to announce it has made grants to the total value of $90,200 for medical research in the coming year.
Grants are made annually to recipients engaged in medical research. Each recipient applies to the Foundation and a scientific committee then decides through a rigorous process the merits of each application. Each application is judged on health significance, scientific merit, designs and methods, expertise and track record of the research team and strong Hawke’s Bay content.
Says Foundation president, Andrew Wares, “No advancements in medicine are possible without research. The recipients are undertaking important medical research which includes:
A study that will include an audit of psychotropic medication in nursing homes in Hawke’s Bay. The results are to be used as a basis for further education and promotion of appropriate prescribing to the residents of nursing homes.
Research into the prevalence of amputation at Hawke’s Bay Hospital in the adult diabetic population. This research will identify factors that may be applied to predict non-traumatic amputation in the Hawke’s Bay diabetic population.
- Assistance to establish a national genetics archive of fatal cases of asthma.
Two other studies are awaiting Government ethical approval before funding can be announced.
It is expected that all the research funded this year, will in time, have direct significance to the health and wellbeing of the Hawke’s Bay community.”
