SUBJECT: Ophthalmologists endorse HDC report
The New Zealand Branch of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists has noted the report from the Health and Disability Commissioner regarding the Southland Ophthalmologist, named as Dr C.
NZ Branch RANZCO thoroughly endorses the HDC’s comments, says Branch Chairman Dr Jim Stewart.
“This case highlights the importance of doctors fully informing patients about the differences between being treated in the public and private health systems.
“In particular, patients need to be fully informed about the costs involved in being a private patient.”
Dr Stewart said while there is no evidence that this is a widespread practice, it is a useful warning for all medical practitioners who are involved in both the public and private sectors.
