New Product To Fight Skin Cancer

New Product To Fight Skin Cancer

Despite increased education to become sun smart the incidence of skin cancer appears to be rising.

Scientists and doctors around the world have observed increased rates in the number of skin cancers despite heightened awareness of sun hazards and the importance of using sunscreens.

According to the Cancer Society of New Zealand the country has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Each year, around 300 New Zealanders die from what is an almost totally preventable disease and excess sun exposure accounts for 90% of all skin cancers.

As a result of increased consumer demand for a non-sensitising, natural alternative sunscreen, Shirley Livesay from UV Natural has committed to creating a naturally derived sunscreen range which does not contain irritants or preservatives and is 100% vegan.
UV Natural consists of zinc oxide and a combination of; powerful anti-oxidants such as green tea and grape seed extract; macadamia, grape seed and colloidal Silica to fight environmental stressors; moisturising and skin-conditioning oils; and vitamin E. This combination of ingredients is suitable for all skin types and will help combat the signs of photo ageing.

Champion Surfer Kate Skarrat understands the importance of being safely protected from the sun because her office is the outdoors, "No matter where I am in the world I usually surf everyday and if I can't get to the beach I go swimming at a pool. UV Natural is a natural way to protect my skin from the sun."

Vitamin D debate

In addition to the rise in skin cancers, the 'vitamin D story', in which sun exposure appears to both cause cancer and prevent cancer, may also be adding to consumer confusion.

The Cancer Society of New Zealand acknowledges that, "A balance is required between avoiding an increased risk of skin cancer and maintaining adequate vitamin D levels."

Some exposure to sunlight does have health benefits such as stimulating the body's production of vitamin D which aids in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus and is essential for healthy bones. Vitamin D is available through nutritional sources, but this does not always provide enough. There is also evidence that exposure to sunlight improves mental wellbeing.

The UV Natural range is blended with natural extracts that act as anti-oxidants and natural oils to enhance the skin's texture while also allowing essential vitamin D to find its way into the skin.
Livesay says, "I was committed to creating a sunscreen range that was both natural and effective for all New Zealanders".

Over the years the UV Natural product range has expanded to include sunscreens for adults, babies, sports people and lip protection.
