Horn Report Good Medicine For Kiwi’s Health
Major health IT supplier endorses national shared service approach.
Auckland. 19 August 2009. – AMS, the largest provider of payroll software to New Zealand’s District Health Boards (DHBs), says the proposed move to increase standardisation of information technology in the sector will improve health outcomes for New Zealanders.
“The Horn Report’s recommendation to establish a National Health Board that would work to consolidate duplicated IT systems in areas like finance and human resources across DHBs would deliver significant efficiencies,” said AMS Chief Executive Noel Reid.
“It would create opportunities for further automation, thus freeing up more resources to be focussed on front-line clinical systems and the provision of healthcare services.”
AMS has been providing payroll, rostering and other human resource management software to the New Zealand health sector for 15 years.
Measured by the number of people paid, it is New Zealand’s largest provider of payroll software to DHBs.
Mr Reid said in AMS’ experience senior leadership at DHBs have been enthusiastic about standardising back-office IT functions as much as possible, but the operating environment has made this difficult.
“Progress has been made on moving towards a common approach, but there is enormous pressure on DHBs to focus on delivery of services to their local area rather than national initiatives.”
Establishing a national entity would give a shared service model the impetus it needed, he said.
