Southland Hospital Receives Support for Clinical Research

Thursday 8 October 2009

Clinical research has been given a boost at Southland Hospital with Southland DHB being granted funding to support senior doctors undertaking clinical research relevant to wellbeing of the Southland Community.

The Southland Medical Foundation has funded Southland DHB for one year to employ a part time research officer to support senior doctors undertaking clinical research projects.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Pim Allen said Southland Hospital has enjoyed a good reputation for offering excellent facilities and equipment, good staff and proximity to scenic attractions, but until now had not been offer to offer much assistance for senior medical officers wanting to engage further in clinical research.

“All of our doctors have trained in teaching hospitals and often have a research interest and it is important to keep up these academic links – but our senior medical staff had to complete research in their own time without assistance.”

“This grant means we are able to finally fill that research gap, and assist staff to build links with necessary research processes (such as getting ethics approvals and offer practical support in data collection and analysis under specialist direction.

“We are very grateful for this grant as this assistance is important for recruitment and retainment. However it also means that important clinical research which is relevant to the Southland community will be progressed much faster, which is great news for all.”
