New Mobile Dental Clinic to be Showcased

The first of Southland District Health Board’s (DHB) brand new mobile dental clinics has arrived and will be showcased at a series of open days throughout the region.

The one chair unit, which was transported from Hamilton, is the first of three clinics purchased by Southland DHB to provide better access to modern oral health services for Southland children.

Southland DHB Oral Health Manager Chris Le Prou says plans are underway for the new mobile unit to visit various community events over the school break, with the schedule to be finalised very soon.

“We will be confirming and then notifying the public soon of what community events we will be attending and we are very excited to be able to showcase the excellent facilities we have to offer.”

“The new clinic is at the forefront in terms of technology and service delivery. As well as providing treatment services, it will be a base for oral health promotion activities.”

If anyone out there is organising an event during January and would like the mobile unit to be there, please email Mr Le Prou at chris.leprou@sdhb.govt.nz

Dental Therapist Mary Heke and Dental Assistant Liz Milne (who are currently based at the DHB’s oral health fixed-clinic at Fernworth School) say they look forward to working in the new mobile unit and think the benefits for Southland children will be tremendous.

”The new mobile unit will make it easier for us to deliver high quality dental care, including radiology, to Southland’s children. The mobile unit also has room for parents to participate in their child’s dental care. We encourage parents to take the opportunity to do this as they are a valuable part of their child’s overall dental health care,” said Liz.

The new clinic will begin visiting schools for treatment in January 2010, with the second clinic due to arrive in June 2010 and the third to join the fleet in January 2011.
