Children's Ward to Open at Waikato Hospital
A ward in Waikato Hospital previously used for adult and children's orthopaedic care has been transformed into a dedicated children's surgical ward.
From Tuesday May 4, children who have had surgery in Waikato Hospital and require care following surgery and or overnight stay will go to ward 26 in the Smith Building. This ward will also continue to provide an inpatient oncology service for children.
The renovated ward has bedside televisions courtesy of Progressive Enterprise's annual Fresh Future appeal while the newly-painted ward reflects children's needs rather than an institutional look and feel.
In time all children requiring general, ear nose and throat, burns and plastics and orthpaedic surgery will get care in ward 26.
A low-key blessing will take place on Monday. In the coming weeks a more formal launch of Waikato Hospital's paediatric service will take place.
