International Men’s Health Week June 14-18th 2010
International Men’s Health Week is a time for men everywhere to take stock of their health. The Cancer Society is encouraging all men to take the opportunity to think about when they last had a chat with their GP about their general health.
“We know that men don’t always have as good a relationship with their GPs as women do, so this week is an opportunity to remind men, particularly those approaching the middle years, to make an appointment to have a chat with their doctor,” says Chief Executive Dalton Kelly. “More importantly, if a man has noticed something is not quite right, don’t put it off, go talk to the GP about it now!”
The health statistics for men are not as good as those for women. More men are diagnosed and die from cancer, than women. Early detection can make a difference so it is important that any changes anywhere in the body are checked by a doctor. The risk for developing cancer can be reduced by not smoking, keeping physically active, keeping body weight within normal range, by limiting alcohol intake and exposure to UV radiation.
