Legendary Kaka T-Shirt to Benefit Young Kiwis Living with Cancer

Auckland, July 2010 – Timed to coincide with the Brazil World Cup quarter final match, electronics brand Sony is auctioning off a brand new limited edition Kaká, signed A.C. Milan game shirt on Trade Me, with all funds going CanTeen.

Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite commonly known as Kaká, is the official Sony football ambassador. A Brazilian football midfielder Kaka currently plays for Real Madrid C.F. and the Brazilian national team. He started his footballing career at the age of eight, when he began playing for a local club. At the time, he also played tennis, and it was not until he moved on to São Paulo FC and signed his first professional contract with the club at the age of fifteen that he chose to focus on football. In 2003 he joined A.C. Milan for a fee of €8.5 million.

The auction will begin on Friday 2 July, with the shirt’s value estimated to be between $1,000 and $2,000.

Sony has built a strong relationship with CanTeen in Australia and plans to replicate that relationship in New Zealand with this auction being the first of a number of activities with the charity.

“We are very excited about working with CanTeen, not only are we are able to provide monetary support through auctions such as this, but our products will be able to make a positive difference in the lives of young people living with cancer who are often stuck in hospitals for long periods of time without any connection to the outside world”, says Sony Marketing Services Manager, Peter Buckton.

CanTeen’s GM Marketing and Fundraising Brad Clark says “We’re stoked about developing a partnership with Sony in New Zealand as our counterparts in Australia are doing some great things together. Sony has had a strong relationship with football for a number of years - not only do they sponsor the Wellington Phoenix but they are also an official FIFA World Cup sponsor. Currently Sony is filming the World Cup in 3D and later this year they will be releasing the 3D footage on DVD for New Zealanders to purchase.

About CanTeen

CanTeen is a New Zealand peer support organisation for young people aged 13 to 24 living with cancer. It is a place where members who might be patients, siblings or bereaved siblings, can share their experiences with other young people who know what it is like to deal with cancer.

CanTeen’s mission is to support, develop and empower young people living with cancer through a national peer support network, offering professional educational and recreational programmes.

CanTeen provides opportunities for almost 1500 young cancer patients, their siblings and bereaved siblings to gain skills and learn to cope with the cards they have been dealt. 

CanTeen has 13 regional branches across the country and is solely reliant on its own fundraising efforts and the generosity of individuals, the community and its corporate partners, as it receives no government funding.
