The right health information to the right people

20 October 2010 Media Statement
The right health information to the right people at the right time

Learning Media Ltd, Quigley and Watts Ltd and Te Rau Matatini have joined forces through a Memorandum of Understanding to establish Te Mura – the Health Literacy Alliance. Signed during International Health Literacy Month (October), the Alliance hopes to raise awareness of the need to improve health literacy in New Zealand – and the services required to do so.

Te Mura’s purpose is to work alongside health organisations to invigorate and inspire the lives of New Zealanders. We want to make health exciting and enable people to easily obtain the information and services they need. By working together, the three organisations can offer their client organisations in the health sector a range of integrated learning, information and communication solutions.

The partners in Te Mura want New Zealanders to be able to make the best decisions possible around the health and wellbeing of their families and themselves. This matches the theme for Health Literacy month of ‘The Right Words For Better Health’ which is strongly focused around the language used to communicate health information – to individuals, families, and communities.

Our focus is on improving New Zealanders’ levels of health literacy, with a particular focus on Māori. The work of Te Mura has a dual focus – to enhance health workers’ ability to communicate information effectively and to enable families to find and understand the information they are receiving.

The Alliance will be an effective collaboration, able to reach across both the health and education sectors to boost the health literacy levels of New Zealanders and to improve the ability of health professionals to communicate health information effectively.
