NZMA CEO to retire after 15 years in the role

New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) Chief Executive Officer Cameron McIver will retire from the Association after 15 years in the role.

Mr McIver left an army career in 1989 and went on to manage several national NGOs. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the NZMA in October 1995.

NZMA Chair Dr Peter Foley said that Mr McIver’s long-standing contribution to the NZMA has been immense due to his broad skills in political advocacy, comprehensive knowledge of the health sector, and the extensive relationships he has developed across the sector.

“He has overseen many changes at the NZMA, as it has continued to expand its influence as an organisation representing both its members, and their patients, in our health sector, which itself has undergone significant restructuring during those 15 years.”

“His leadership, sound advice, and wisdom have held the NZMA in good stead over the years. It is with regret that we accept his decision to retire but we wish him all the best in his retirement and future endeavours.”

Mr McIver said he would be sorry to leave the NZMA.
“I’ve been at the NZMA a long time and it has always been much more than a job to me. The breadth of issues that the NZMA deals with is incredibly diverse and far-reaching. It has been very satisfying to have a leadership role in an organization which, by advocating for the interests of both patients and doctors, makes a significant contribution to the health of New Zealanders.”

“I am looking forward to spending less time working, although I do intend to continue with some governance, advocacy and policy work within the health sector, which will continue to face major challenges.”

“I would like to acknowledge the terrific people I have worked with, both doctors and other colleagues. The health sector depends on its people and I have been fortunate to have had the support of many. I would particularly like to recognize and thank members of the NZMA Board and Councils, other NZMA members, and my staff at the National Office.”

The NZMA is now undertaking a recruitment process to appoint a new CEO to this important and influential position.

Mr McIver’s formal date for finishing in the role is planned for mid-March 2011.
