St John rose planted in new ED

A white rose gifted to Waikato District Health Board by St John last year to commemorate its 125th anniversary, now has a home in Waikato Hospital's new emergency department.

Nurse Bea Retter will keep a close eye on the rose which Health Waikato chief operating officer Jan Adams has been looking after for several months at her home. The rose was replanted yesterday watched by special guests St John Friends of the Emergency Department volunteers Trish Middleton and Ed Macdonald.

St John gifted Waikato District Health Board the white rose, called Luminis (Latin word meaning light), last year in recognition of the DHB's association and ongoing support

Staff chose to plant the rose in the Emergency Department's courtyard to mark the close relationship they have with St John.

Bred by Matthews Nurseries in Whanganui, the hybrid rose tinged with cream bloomed well at its temporary home with Mrs Adams.

A limited number of the plants will go on sale to commemorate St John's 125th anniversary; proceeds will go to the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and to give thanks to St John supporters.

Waikato Hospital's new emergency department opens at 8am next Tuesday (February 8).
