Oral Health Practitioners Highlight Decay
The School Dental Service 'Big day in' programme was held recently at Waikato Hospital’s Bryant Education Centre Auditorium (programme attached).
The programme themed 'Early childhood caries from start to finish", was an outstanding success with demand exceeding the auditorium capacity.
Attendees included dentists, dental therapists, dental assistants, service managers and specialists, with some travelling from as far as Christchurch, Palmerston North and Auckland as well as from the five DHBs in the Midland region – Lakes, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Tairawhiti.
Keynote speakers included Dr Erin Mahoney, well -known and respected paediatric dentist Dr Katie Ayers and Dr David Marshall from Hawkes Bay. The intention with the programme was to highlight the problem of decay in young children (Dr Erin Mahoney), the application of modern clinical skills in dealing with our patients (Dr Katie Ayers) and what district health boards are doing to tackle these issues (Dr David Marshall).
The day concluded with an open forum on progressing the concepts learnt during the day in district health boards and private practices.
The 'Big day in' aligns with a service objective to have affordable continuing professional development available for staff and encourage collaboration and participation across both district health board and the oral health sector.
