Be Aware of the Health Risks in Hot Weather
With warm temperatures accompanied by high humidity, it’s timely to remind Aucklanders to protect their health.
Auckland Regional Public Health Service Clinical Director Dr Julia Peters says many people will not be aware of the health risks associated with the warmth and accompanying high humidity.
“Auckland’s hot summer weather can be a problem for the vulnerable such as the elderly, young children and those with medical conditions. The humid weather has already been disrupting sleep patterns.
“The messages are common sense: stay out of the sun, if you can. Sit in the shade, drink lots of cool water, wear light coloured, loose clothing. Keep your house as cool as possible to facilitate better sleep at night.
“Check out our website for more advice and tips on protecting yourself, your family, including pets, in this extremely hot weather.
“We encourage people to check on elderly neighbours or family to make sure that they’re okay and drinking enough water in the heat,” says Dr Peters.
Auckland Regional Public Health Service has published public health advice and information on its website www.arphs.govt.nz/Summer/HotWeather.asp.
