ACC offers 200,000 reasons to support World Day for Health

ACC offers 200,000 reasons to support World Day for Health and Safety at Work (28 April 2011)

Last year, ACC received around 200,000 claims for work-related injuries.

“Because ACC sees first-hand the impact that workplace injury has on individuals, their families and businesses, we’re right behind World Day for Health and Safety at Work," says Dr Keith McLea, ACC’s General Manager Insurance and Prevention Services.

Dr McLea says “The day offers a good opportunity for employers and workers to reflect on workplace health and safety, and how they can prevent injuries at work.”

On 1 April this year, ACC introduced ‘experience rating’ to help improve workplace safety. It does this by providing discounts on Work Account levies for employers and self-employed people with a better claims history, and loadings for those whose workplace safety and claims record is not so good.

“Under experience rating we'll be able to reward those businesses who work hard to keep their workplace safe, and help those with poorer records to improve,” says Dr McLea.

ACC also has a range of tools and resources to help businesses improve workplace safety, and support injured workers to return to work quickly and safely. These include the ‘preventing and managing discomfort, pain and injury (DPI) programme’.

“The DPI programme has positively impacted workplace health and safety for over four years now, helping achieve a significant decline in new claims caused by sprains and strains,” says Dr McLea.

The DPI programme can provide businesses with tips on how to improve staff wellbeing, how to implement a health and safety system and how to get injured workers back to work successfully. To find out more, visit www.acc.co.nz/dpi
