Waikato Police are seeking witnesses to a traffic incident in the town that has left a Cambridge couple critically injured.
Sergeant Gordon Grantham of the Cambridge Police said the couple were seen standing on a median strip at the intersection of SH1 and Albert St about 9.43am.
"The strip divides traffic turning left into Albert St and right on to SH1.
"Initial indications are a southbound truck and trailer unit and after completing a passing manoeuvre the elderly couple were found lying on the roadway. The male suffered critical head injuries while his wife's condition is described as serious."
Mr Grantham said both injured parties were taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance.
"The truck driver stopped at the scene and has been interviewed by Police. At this point in time we are trying to establish what has happened and to assist with this the Waikato Serious Crash and the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Units are carrying out enquiries.
"We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed what occurred or who saw the couple on the traffic island around the time of the incident."
Anyone with any information on what occurred in this morning's incident is asked to contact the Cambridge Police on (07) 827 5531.
