Over 45? Get your eyes tested this month
Over 45? Get your eyes tested this month.
Today marks the start of Glaucoma Awareness Month. With an ageing population it is estimated that 76,000 people in New Zealand will have glaucoma by 2031. Visique optometrists are encouraging everyone over the age of 45 to take the time this month to get tested.
Glaucoma is a group of related eye diseases that gradually steal sight without warning. Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve. There is no cure for glaucoma-yet. However, medication or surgery can slow or prevent further vision loss. The appropriate treatment depends upon the type of glaucoma among other factors; however, early detection is vital to stopping the progress of the disease.
International research into glaucoma has revealed that the following factors increase the likelihood of the occurrence of glaucoma;
- * Over 40
years of age
* Another family member with glaucoma
* Short sightedness
* Diabetes
* High blood pressure
* Use of steroids (which can cause glaucoma for some people)
Unfortunately 50% of people with glaucoma don't even know they have it, as it slowly steals their vision. Consequently, early detection through regular eye examinations is the best protection. From the age of 45, it is recommended to have an eye examination for glaucoma every 5 years, and then every 3 years from the age of 60.
