More funding to fight housing related illness in Porirua
As part of a push to tackle high rates of
rheumatic fever and other respiratory issues in Porirua,
Capital and Coast DHB is teaming up with Sustainability
Trust to insulate cold, low income homes in the area.
The Health Board and Hutt Mana Charitable Trust are contributing extra funding for home insulation in Porirua. This will bring the cost within reach of many families with housing related health issues – down to less than $500 for an average sized 3-bedroom home.
Sustainability Trust CEO Philip Squire says ‘Typical health effects of living in a cold house are asthma, persistent colds and coughs, breathing problems, depression and skin conditions. Children and the elderly are often the worst affected.
‘If you or anyone in your family has any of these problems, we encourage you to call Sustainability Trust about getting extra insulation funding, up to 80% off in many cases.’
‘Insulation is the single most cost effective solution for making homes warm and protecting the health of your family’, Philip says.
‘Even if you rent your home, Sustainability Trust can help. Home-owners, tenants, and landlords can call about the extra subsidy’.
‘We are also taking referrals from medical and social service practitioners. We have referral forms and posters to make this process as easy as possible, and any professionals wanting to work with us should call us directly’.
