It's our birthday so here is Waikato Hospital, by the numbers
Waikato Hospital celebrates 125 years tomorrow.
On December 1, 1886, the first meeting of the Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board took place in Hamilton – a significant day, marking the birth of Waikato Hospital.
A new book on the history and people behind the hospital, The Village on the Hill: Celebrating 125 Years of Waikato Hospital, reveals some other numbers, and interesting statistics.
Waikato Hospital is a great place to get a cup of tea or coffee.
Ward meal assistants make 900,000 cups of tea for patients every year. If you are after a cappuccino or flat white, baristas at various outlets on campus make an estimated 164,500 cups of coffee each year.
Behind the scenes, the kitchen and laundry are bustling places. Every week 100,000 pieces of linen are washed by laundry staff, and 1500 bags of dirty sheets and clothes are collected daily.
Facecloths seem to vanish into the ether; laundry services report that 12,000 facecloths a month disappear into a big black hole.
Annually, the kitchen makes 770,000 meals for hospital patients, and another 45,000 for Meals on Wheels. On average the hospital uses 95,500 loaves of bread, 232,000 eggs, 22,200 kilograms of bananas, 42,000 kilograms of potato and 242,000 litres of milk a year. Patients devour 200,000 serves of icecream a year.
And to mop up all the mess, the Cleaning Services department uses 7680 litres of disinfectant each month for general cleaning. The public toilets of the hospital are stocked with 6100 toilet rolls (3840 standard and 2260 jumbo-sized) every month.
