Midlands Health Network A Winner On The
Night
Primary health care provider Midlands Health Network has tonight claimed a top prize worth $1500 in the Waikato District Health Board Best of Health Awards.
The project, ‘eReferral best practice generic template roll out to Waikato DHB general practices', beat six other projects to win the awards' collaboration category.
The collaboration category is designed to recognise and reward outstanding examples of collaboration within our health services, across primary and secondary health sectors, and intersectorally.
These collaborations must have contributed to service improvements or better health outcomes to be considered for the awards.
A brief description of the project
Pinnacle Group Ltd, which is now Midlands Health Network, held the contract to roll out the eReferral best practice generic template to all practices within the Waikato DHB area.
This was based on the successful development and evaluation of the template and was the first step in the primary to secondary electronic transfer of patient referral information.
Due to the efficiencies and effectiveness of the new referral system, more clinical time is available to see patients and improve health outcomes.
It takes administration burden away from the already busy GP and triage specialists, for example, deciphering handwritten letters, illegible faxes, and learning the process of GP referrals.
Judges comments
The judging panel called this an excellent collaborative project that is to be applauded.
“It shows thinking outside
the square and that there is life beyond Waikato Hospital.
“The project has the potential to
be replicated widely, with the results being very
impressive.”
Other projects that received honourable mentions at the awards were:
• Community pharmacy anticoagulation management
service from Pharmacy 547
• The Waihi Project (family
violence) from Population Health, Waikato DHB
• Waikato virtual lesion clinic from Waikato DHB’s
Dermatology Department; and
• Working together to
reach the health target of 90% of two-year-olds being fully
immunised by June 2011 from Toiora Primary Health
Organisation
