Public Health Association Conference gets underway tomorrow

Public Health Association Conference gets underway tomorrow

16 September 2013

Delegates and speakers from overseas and around the country are converging on New Plymouth this week for the Public Health Association’s annual conference. This year the conference theme is Partnership or Collaboration; is there a difference? The venue is the Devon Hotel, New Plymouth, Taranaki.

Conference Chair Lisa McNab said the conference’s keynote speeches, the workshops and the plenary sessions will all provide a unique opportunity for anyone interested in public health to think about the way we work, the way we prioritise and the way we engage.

The conference will commence later this afternoon with a Powhiri at Owae Marae, Waitara. The conference proper will start on Tuesday 17 September and will feature a range of prominent speakers. It will conclude on Thursday 19 September.

A number of high-profile speakers will present at the conference, including:
Dame Anne Salmond: Distinguished Professor in Maori Studies and Anthropology at the University of Auckland, and the 2013 New Zealander of the Year
Dame Susan Devoy: New Zealand's Race Relations Commissioner and former world squash champion
Annete Sykes: Human rights lawyer
Metiria Turei: Green Party Co-leader
Moana Jackson: Maori lawyer specialising in Treaty of Waitangi and constitutional issues
Dr Mihi Ratima: Director of Taumata Associates, a Maori health and development consultancy
Associate Professor Elsie Ho: leading expert in migration and mental health studies in New Zealand
Professor Damon Selesa: Head Professor at Auckland University's Centre of Pacific Studies
Dr Anwar Ghani: President of the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand.

The conference is the biggest event on the 2013 public health calendar, and media are welcome to attend. More information about the conference, including a programme, is available on the conference website.
