A further call to action against homelessness has been made by the Canterbury District Health Board which provides further evidence that homelessness is a growing issue across the country. The District Health Board expressed significant concerns about the increasing numbers of mental health clients sleeping on the streets and the need to take action.
“These are some of our most vulnerable people in our community and they are being let down because the our government continues to deny that homelessness does exist in New Zealand, says Corie Haddock, Co-chair of NZCEH. ‘Action needs to be taken to ensure that our most in need are given the support and resources required to maintain their health and wellbeing’.
‘Community and church based organisations have tried to combat this epidemic. ‘The only way we can end homelessness in New Zealand is by working in partnership with local and central government in a strategic manner” says Dr Shiloh Groot. ‘Homelessness won’t go away despite the committed and on-going efforts of communities alone.’
