Hawkes Bay Pacific Leaders Lead the Way
Hawkes Bay Pacific Leaders Lead the Way
On Saturday 9th Nov at 10am a Graduation Ceremony will be held for 10 Pacific Island Leaders who have recently completed an intensive series of 16 workshops on Addressing Domestic Violence. This group joins another group of 12 Pacific Leaders who graduated last year as part of DOVE HB’s (Domestic Violence Intervention and Education) Pacific Partnership initiative.
The graduates are recognised Ministers and Leaders within 7 different Pacific Island ethnicities. Tevita Faka’osi, the Pacific Island Coordinator for DOVE HB along with Kara Duncan-Hewitt (Stopping Family Violence Trainer) have been facilitating these workshops with the vision that the Leaders will be able to share the information and resources gained within their own communities within culturally appropriate ways. The graduates all speak both English and various dialects from their Pacific Island Communities including Tongan, Samoan, Cook Island, Kiribati, Tuvaluan, Tokelauan and Pukapuka so are well placed to be able to share their learnings within their communities.
This Hawkes Bay initiative is leading the way in proactive promoting of safe and supportive families within Pacific communities, developing a model that has a lot of interest from other communities seeking to do similar work. The graduation will also celebrate the unveiling of the Kianga Pasifika Services logo and partnership with DOVE HB.
The graduation ceremony will be followed by traditional dances from the various Pacific cultural groups represented and traditional pacific island food.
Venue: Cook Island Community Hall, Swansea Drive, Flaxmere, Hastings. Time: 10am, Saturday 9th November 2013.
