Wellington Free Ambulance expands Capital’s food rescue

Wellington Free Ambulance expands Capital’s food rescue service

Wellington Free Ambulance is now partnering with Kaibosh food rescue and Wellington Hospital’s Wishbone café to plug a gap in the Capital’s food rescue chain.

When Wellington Free Ambulance volunteer ambulance officer, Craig Shepherd, learned that Kaibosh couldn’t collect excess food from the Wishbone at the hospital, because of the late closing time of that café, he decided to fix the problem.

Mr Shepherd, a long-time supporter of Kaibosh, placed a fridge in the Wellington Free Ambulance Newtown Station, which is in the hospital complex, so Wishbone’s excess food could be stored safely overnight for pick up and redistribution the next morning by Kaibosh.

“Wellington Free Ambulance jumped at the idea of being able to help out,” he said.

“The food will now be at a safe temperature for redistribution, and we help to feed hungry mouths.”

Mr Shepherd volunteers for Wellington Free Ambulance to help people, make a difference, and support the community – and this new partnership does just that.

“Kaibosh is a wonderful organisation,” he says.

“I love seeing stuff that might go to the landfill be redistributed to feed the needy.

“No one loses, everyone wins. There’s nothing bad about it.”

Kaibosh general manager, Matt Dagger, is extremely happy to tick the final Wellington Wishbone off the list.

“We’ve never been able to access food from the Wishbone in the hospital before,” he says.

“This is a great example of businesses and community groups collaborating for positive community outcomes. We couldn’t do it without Wellington Free Ambulance and Wishbone.”
