Medical professionals will have blood on their hands

Doctors and neurologists will have blood on their hands if they refuse a legal cannabinoid prescription to a man in a coma.

Alex Renton's family want to try Sativex on him to reduce seizure activity but medical professionals are refusing to prescribe or administer it to him.

Sativex is entirely legal and can be prescribed for any condition, including approved and unapproved uses.

Despite patients as young as 11 being prescribed Sativex for seizures, Mr Renton's family have not been able to get a prescription. They believe he will soon die without the medical cannabinoids.

"This begs the question: Why is the Ministry of Health prepared to let a young man die rather than try a legally available prescription, which has a good chance of helping?" Cannabis Party leader Julian Crawford said.

"Many medical professionals seem unaware of the importance of the endo-cannabinoid system in regulating adverse brain activity. The stigma surrounding cannabis should not extend to legally available prescription medicines."

The party calls on the Ministry of Health to take urgent action to prescribe and administer Sativex to Mr Renton.
